Participate in a vaccine study

Your health is at the heart of our research. One study at a time, we work to strengthen protection against serious diseases. Every year, thousands of Finns take part in our scientifically rigorous and ethically conducted vaccine studies. Their participation makes it possible to develop ever safer and more effective vaccines, and to update those included in the national vaccination programme. Your participation drives progress in public health: bringing new vaccines from research to reality.

What does participation mean?

We want you to feel confident that you receive clear and reliable information about each study, that your decision to take part is entirely voluntary, and that you are always treated with kindness and respect. Participating in a vaccine study is a meaningful way to promote health, and we want the experience to be positive for you in every way. Each study follows its own research plan (protocol), which means the practical details vary. Most studies take place at our research clinics, but some are also carried out in collaboration with healthcare organisations.

What happens at the clinic?

  1. At the vaccine research clinic, you will first review the research information together with our staff. This will make it easier for you to decide whether you want to participate in the study

  2. This will be followed by giving informed consent (signing a consent form) and a health check-up by the research doctor

  3. Next, you will be given the research vaccine, after which your condition will be monitored at the research clinic for about half an hour

The study may involve more than one visit to the research clinic, and your health will also be monitored at home between visits. You will receive clear instructions from the study doctor and nurse. Monitoring usually includes keeping a symptom diary, measuring your temperature, and regular follow-up calls from the study nurse. Blood samples may also be taken to confirm that the vaccine is working – in other words, that your body has started to form antibodies. If you wish, the injection site can be numbed before the sample is taken, so the procedure is painless.
