Infant RSV prevention has changed rapidly

Since 2022, two long-acting monoclonal antibodies and a maternal RSV vaccine have been approved. Clinical trials showed strong efficacy, and emerging real-world evidence has reported similar or even higher effectiveness in reducing RSV-related hospitalisations.

The next questions are already taking shape: How long does protection last? Which children benefit from protection during their second RSV season? And can preventing RSV early in life reduce longer-term respiratory morbidity?

In a new mini review published in Acta Paediatrica, FVR’s Lead Medical Expert Santtu Heinonen (MD, PhD) and Pekka Vartiainen (MD, PhD) examine the evidence, implementation strategies and remaining research gaps in this rapidly evolving field.
